Duchess is a small laid back girl who is very gentle and sweet. She follows you around the house looking for attention at times. She was very stressed when she arrived, but she is aleady calming down and getting more relaxed. She plays well with the others . After living outside on a farm and having pups, Duchess is really for an easy retirement with a lot of soft beds. She is the mom to many of the dogs we have brought to Ohio in the last couple years.

Mama Duchess has corns on two of her pads. We will update her when we find out a little more about this sweetie. Seniors truly are the BEST!

Update 8/10: Duchess is a miracle girl! She has made remarkable improvement in just one week. She came home from OSU one week ago and was very weak. She tired easily, but her appetite was excellent – as long as you gave her tasty food. Yesterday, she was quite bouncy - - play bowing and trying to get my other senior girl, Melody, to play with her. She is smiling now and is clearly starting to feel so much better. She is truly a tough girl. I thought she was very brave throughout her entire ordeal. She returns to OSU on 8/12 for a recheck. We are hoping her heart rhythms are back to normal. Thank to everyone for their thoughts and prayers for this mama!

8/16/10 Update: Duchess is making greyt strides. She had a little bleeding from the dental extractions, but nothing in four days. She needs to put on some weight and that will come in time. On Sunday evening, Duchess started playing with stuffies. She was playing very hard with them – a happy sight for her caretaker! Last night, I caught her counter-surfing! She definitely caught me by surprise – and I have to watch where I put that darn remote control too… Mama is definitely making a lot of super progress. Thanks to everyone who had donated to Mama Duchess and her new life as a retired brood mom! She can look forward to many years of being loving, soft beds, and good food, and, the most important of all, her Freedom!

*** PLEASE HELP ***
Mama Duchess may be the last mama to come off the farm in Live Oak, FL because of suspended breeding operations this spring. Two of her sisters were rescued earlier this year and we have taken many of her pups over the last few years. We really wanted to get her off the farm because we knew she may be having a difficult time living outside in this hot summer heat at the age of 10. On July 14th, Pilots Janine and Mike flew to the farm to pick up Duchess and several other greyhounds who needed a place to go. The pilots had to ditch their plane in northern Florida due to alternator trouble. Always resourceful, they rented a vehicle and drove all four greyhounds to Cincinnati, arriving at midnight. Earth, Hammer and Chatty Lou made the trip along with Mama Duchess. Duchess was spayed on Friday, July 30. Her teeth were just horrible and she lost 10 teeth. Disaster struck however and she joined the ranks of the unfortunate greyhounds who experience bleeding problems after surgery. At first, we thought the bleeding was from the dental, but after a few hours, the bleeding got much worse – then even worse on the way to the emergency clinic. We knew she was in big trouble. At 1:00 a.m. she was admitted to the Care Center in Blue Ash. The vet said she was very critical. Fluids and then blood plasma was given along with a medication to promote blood clotting. I emailed Dr. Couto of Ohio State University on Saturday morning asking him for help for our brood mama. I explained that Duchess was a mom who had just started her retirement only two weeks ago after living her entire life as a brood mom. Dr. Couto being the saint that he is said they would gladly help her. I transported her to OSU from the Care Center to OSU on Saturday afternoon. Mama was in very critical condition by the time I pulled up to the OSU vet clinic at 6 p.m. I thought I was going to lose her before I could get her there. OSU techs were waiting for us when we pulled up. I am always amazed and impressed by their efficiency and skill. Within the hour, they had run tests on her, given her more blood, fluids and oxygen. On August 1 she was not out of the woods, but the doctor said she was not displeased with mama’s progress considering her condition when she arrived. It is a miracle that she had survived. Duchess is a plucky girl and has been so very good throughout this ordeal. It was heartbreaking to see her in such bad shape - such a gentle soul. On Monday morning, an OSU doctor called with really super news and – the best of news! He said if she continued to do well then she could come home possibly as early as Tuesday afternoon. I am not a fan of Mondays, but this Monday is an unforgettable one. We are so very happy that Duchess can look forward to a long happy retirement full of pillows, couches, treats, and love. She certainly deserves it after having so many pups. Go Mama Duchess! This is a very hard financial hit for our rescue group. We need money to pay Mama’s vet bills.

If you would like to help with mama’s vet bills, please send a check to Joey’s Greyhound Friends, 1757 Acreview Drive, Cincinnati, OH 45240 or you can make an on-line donation via Pay Pal.

There are many more Florida greyhounds needing to come into our group and we want to continue to bring them north. In order to do that, we must be able to pay for vet expenses.

Thank You!
